What is Windy Conditions?
Windy Conditions is a weekly Chicago sports newsletter covering the Bears, Blackhawks, Bulls, and Cubs. Since it was founded in January 2024, it is one of the only publications tracking four major Chicago franchises through a single editorial lens: championship trajectory.
The Mission
Chicago sports fans can find coverage everywhere. Game recaps are on every site. Hot takes are on every podcast and radio show. In a short time, media transitioned from newspaper headlines to highlight shows to websites to instant information at the tip of your finger. So what’s missing from a media landscape that seemingly has it all? Biased fans providing level-headed analysis of their favorite teams. Chicago needs a place to look past the chaos and find out: which team will win a trophy next? That’s why Windy Conditions exists. We all want our teams to win.
The Writer
Windy Conditions is written entirely by Kyle Baum — one writer, every issue, since January 2024. There is no editorial team or additional contributors. Just one Chicago sports fan who has these teams in his DNA. He lives and dies by their successes and shortcomings but understands the bigger picture of championship pursuits. Every take, every reaction, and every analysis comes from the same voice.
Why is it called “Windy Conditions”?
Windy Conditions has two relevant definitions:
1) The current Chicago sports environment at any given moment.
The state of all four franchises right now — the moves being made, the windows opening and closing, and the decisions that will define the next decade of Chicago sports.
2) The required steps to return a trophy to Chicago.
There is always a path to a championship. Die-hard fans often understand how their teams can move in the right direction.
